Several feared dead after heavy rain in Madrid

At least two people have died after torrential rainstorms battered Spain, causing widespread flooding and shutting roads and railway lines. The worst-hit area was the centre of the country, with two men killed in separate incidents in Toledo province and some people trapped on the roofs of their houses as they tried to escape rising water levels. Emergency services were looking for a man who went missing after his car was swept away early on Monday by a swollen river in the rural area of Aldea del Fresno, west of Madrid, a spokesman from Madrid’s emergency services, Javier Chivite, told the public broadcaster RTVE.
