That’s been the reality for almost 30 years for the people of Belarus, who have had to live in a society controlled by one man: Alexander Lukashenko, Europe’s last dictator, who rules in Minsk with an iron fist. In 2020 it seemed that the winds of change had finally arrived, and the people of Belarus put their hopes in democracy. Sadly, Lukashenko had other plans, and despite massive demonstrations against a rigged election, the dictator stayed. But in his efforts to scare and intimidate, Lukashenko set into motion a series of events that would see the rise of an unlikely political underdog. Meet Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. By imprisoning her husband, far from silencing her, it did the opposite. But rather than political ambition, it was love which made her step forward.
